Lighting Tutorial by tremault5 Lighting Tutorial by tremault5
I promised a lighting tutorial to ~Alistu and said I would do it if he can provide the line drawing.

He provided the drawing and so now I have the tutorial.

I hope it helps somebody.

I used this tutorial as a reference when coloring the lighting for my latest piece. It was very helpful and made shading and lighting a lot easier for me, thanks for the tutorial c:

is it the one on the bed with the computer?

The lighting in that one is really awesome! it fills the image with atmosphere, it makes me feel all happy and special, like I was also staying up late with my computer for company.
I'm really glad my tutorial helped you ^_^

Very simple, and very useful
I'm taking concept art, and we're doing lighting right now. Many of the things my professor and other artist say makes sense but when it's time to execute it just baffles me and I can't understand what they mean. This was very to the point to a certain degree and explains very basics. Thank you for this!

I'm just glad it helped even a little :)
I'm very flattered if it seems like my explanation was more effective than your professor! ^_^

Wow, this is helpful stuff! Just wondering though, wouldn't smudging give off a better effect for the light coming from the oven? Or is it just style?

thank you :)

smudging, well it is a technique, not a concept. the purpose of the tutorial was the concept. i think if you are skilled at smudging, then i think you could get a really good effect using that. i would be interested to see what you could do with it. :)

unless you mean something else and i have misunderstood?

---
do you perhaps mean adding a glow onto it?
i think adding a glow on the oven would work well, but that's more of a camera effect rather than a lighting model.

It's all very straight-edge and clean. It would probably be a good base for making the background in a comic. :aww:

light is so important in any artwork... i love the tutorial and will be referring to it quite often...
however... i did not get how you used the mask tool on the layer so it automatically comes in black

did I do that?
I'm not sure. if I did, it must have been by accident!

well, if you have a selection and then you make a mask, the selection is white and the outside is black. so it essentially turns the selection into a mask. but if i want it to be black to start off with, i think i normally have to use the paintbucket.
